Storm Giants

The Storm Giants of the northern peaks are an ancient, colossal race of giant-kin deeply woven into the history and mythos of the Sword Coast, particularly within the frozen reaches of Icewind Dale. Enormously powerful, naturally adept in the arts of divination, and intensely hostile to dragons, they represent a force of nature that wise travelers know better than to antagonize.

The Ordning and Kuldahar

The storm giants’ existence is heavily governed by the Ordning, the strict, cosmic hierarchy that defines all true giant races under the All-Father, Annam. This stands in stark contrast to the Firbolgs of Kuldahar, who reside under the boughs of an enormous world tree created by Annam’s favored daughter, Diancastra, to exist outside the Ordning’s constraints.

To protect both the world tree and the isolated storm giants dwelling in the surrounding mountains, the Kuldahar Firbolgs established a secluded lifestyle. They serve as a protective buffer, isolating the mountain-dwelling storm giants from the intrusion of the outside world and preserving their quiet contemplation.

The Dragon Wars

The deep divination capabilities of the storm giants allow them to sense cataclysmic shifts in the world long before they occur. Three centuries ago, when the storm giants sensed the impending arrival of the great chromatic dragons, they mobilized their isolated mountain communities. Rather than waiting for the threat to reach their hearths, they sent forth hosts to make war and confront the draconic menace directly.

This preemptive campaign interlinked their destiny with the legendary band of heroes—including Hrothgar Hillsfar (the Firbolg skald who was actually the polymorphed and memory-altered Farwald), Lady Tanager Alagondar, and Elminster Aumar—who eventually succeeded in slaying the green dragon Virethas and banishing the other great wyrms.

Traits and Current Standing

In the cold expanses of the north, particularly around the mountains bordering Lac Dinneshere, the storm giants are regarded as Hrothgar’s “father-kin.” They remain a reclusive but terrifyingly potent faction:
