Targos
Situated at the frostbitten threshold of the far north, Targos is a vital frontier settlement that sits directly at the entrance to Icewind Dale. Guarded by the towering, jagged peaks of the Throat of the World Mountains and positioned within reach of the treacherous Sea of Moving Ice, Targos serves as the primary gateway to a land of perpetual winter, ancient secrets, and colossal dangers.
Geography and Regional Context
Targos is positioned as the crucial entry point for anyone seeking to brave the glacial expanses of the northern frontier.
- The Throat of the World Mountains: Rising sharply behind the coast, these peaks harbor perilous blizzards, sudden avalanches, and the formidable frost giants. Passing through this territory requires travelers to adapt to local custom: frost giants value martial strength above all else and despise stealth. Traditional lore suggests that instead of sneaking, travelers must project strength or use clever misdirection to divert their hostile attention.
- Lac Dinneshere: Located further inland near Targos, this frozen lake is historically significant. On its shores lies the empty tomb of the Firbolg hero Hrothgar, where the legendary White Dragon Mask was originally buried to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Cult of the Dragon.
- East Haven & Helsingor: Neighboring settlements that mark the frozen trade routes of the region. Helsingor lies to the southeast of Targos, while East Haven sits directly on the shore of Lac Dinneshere.
Threats and History
The region surrounding Targos has recently become a highly contested zone of draconic activity and undead infiltration:
- The Shadow of Cryovain: The white dragon Cryovain, the Everfrost, originally made his lair in the neighboring peaks. Though he eventually fled south to the Sword Mountains to escape the cult’s grasp, Cryovain was seen actively hunting goats and terrorizing the local valleys around Targos as recently as six months ago.
- The Luskan Undead: The cold mountain passes near the settlement have grown increasingly perilous due to heavily armored wight commanders and frozen thralls. These undead forces—immune to nonmagical weaponry—frequently assault caravans traveling south toward Luskan, raising the dead to bolster their ranks for a brewing war.
- The Legacy of the North: Historically, the region is tied to the sleeping giant god Torvik (Ulutiu) and the reclusive Firbolg settlement of Kuldahar. For those journeying from the southern metropolis of Neverwinter to recover ancient relics or secure the northern borders, Targos represents the final bastion of civilization before the wild, lawless frontier.
